Your Cape Tribulation overnight tour commences with complimentary pick-ups from Cairns, the Northern Beaches or Port Douglas. If starting in Cairns, you’ll enjoy the scenic drive around the beaches and then up to Port Douglas, collecting guests along the way.
Our first stop is a short restroom break in the Mossman area. After which we continue north to the Daintree River. Here we must stop to catch the cable ferry. The landscape on the other side is almost an instant transformation from rural to rainforest.
The road narrows and your views are dominated by the beautiful, lush rainforest which towers over the coach. This ancient landscape remains largely unchanged and as we drive deeper, you’ll appreciate the ever-increasing beauty of this 135-million-year-old Gondwana Rainforest.
We’ll stop at the Alexandra Range Lookout which provides panoramic views over the Daintree River and its delta. Pending conditions of the day, some landmarks visible from here may include Port Douglas, Snapper Island, Cape Kimberly and even the far northern section of Cairns. It’s a great photo opportunity.
Your Cape Tribulation overnight tour continues to either the Marrdja or Jindalba rainforest boardwalks. Your friendly guide will take the time to point out plants of interest and provide an insight into this unique ecosystem, that is the Daintree Rainforest. This place has been caught in a time capsule; a landscape that hasn’t changed in millions of years and one that we hope, doesn’t change for millions of years more.
The Marrdja (which means Rainforest Walk in the local Aboriginal language) Boardwalk leads us over a complex mangrove swamp system. The root systems of these trees are quite striking and are an ingenious solution that these plants have evolved over many, many years of living on the tidal edge.
After the guided walk we head north to Cape Tribulation itself. As guests of our Cape Tribulation overnight tour you will now be delivered/collected to/from your selected accommodation provider. This happens at around 12pm. Please note lunch is not included for you, as day tour guests will eat while we drop you / pick you up from your chosen hotel. If we are collecting you for your return to Cairns, please make sure you’ve had an early lunch before we pick you up at 12pm to return to Cairns.
For those beginning your Cape Tribulation overnight tour, the rest of the day is now yours to relax and explore as you choose. We shall be back to collect you tomorrow, or on your allocated departure date. For those who have already stayed overnight and are now rejoining the trip, your Cape Tribulation adventure continues.
Once all of our Cape Tribulation day tour and overnight tour guests are aboard the coach, we head back towards the Daintree River. If time is permitting, we’ll stop at the Daintree Ice-Cream Company, where you have the opportunity to purchase a tropical fruit ice-cream (which is eaten on the bus). Keep an eye out for the local Cassowaries.
Then it’s onwards to the Crocodile/Wildlife spotting cruise on the Daintree River. This impressive river system is home to many native critters, including large saltwater crocodiles. From the safety of the boat you can view the tidal mangroves, which are home to wading Egrets and resting crocodiles. Other animals you might see during a Daintree River cruise include pythons, tree snakes and butterflies. The cruise commentary will provide a better understanding of the unique mangrove systems and their importance, not only to the rainforest, but to the Great Barrier Reef as well.
Cruise completed, there’s time for afternoon tea and a ‘cuppa’. Then we are off to the famous Mossman Gorge.
The Mossman river makes its way down through the gorge surrounded by lush rainforest. The landscape is a combination of giant granite boulders and mossy rocks, with dragonflies and butterflies flitting in the light. The cascading waterfalls of the gorge are a magical location for a refreshing swim, so make sure you bring your bathers. NB: Sometimes it is unsafe for swimming (due to flooding and/or currents and fast flowing water), your guide will asses conditions on the day and also supervise those of you that decide to swim. Alternatively, just relax to the soothing sound of running water and calling birds.
Our last stop for the day is Rex Range lookout, where we stop to get some amazing pictures of our beautiful stretch of coastline, known to the locals as ‘Great Barrier Reef Drive’.
